Indian fried fish - mackerel or snapper

Ingredients

  • 4 mackerel or snapper fillets, cut into 2-3 pieces each
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 4 teaspoons red chilli powder
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp, or kokum peels pulp
  • 4 tablespoons rice powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Oil, to deep fry
  • Onion rings, to garnish (optional)
  • Lemon wedges, to garnish (optional)

Method

  • Step 1
    Wash the mackerels thoroughly. Season with salt, turmeric powder and lemon juice. Set aside for 10 minutes.
  • Step 2
    Marinate the mackerels with the rest of the ingredients except rice powder and place in the refrigerator for about an hour.
  • Step 3
    Heat the oil till it is very hot. Roll the mackerels in rice powder one by one and and deep-fry in batches on medium heat till they are crisp.
  • Step 4
    Garnish with onion rings and lemon wedges.
